Martin Luther King Jr. is Memory of 'American Icon'

The great Martin Luther King, Jr. helped turned the tides of history never be altered, but their strength lies in how his wisdom continues to resonate to this day, always giving us a dream against which to measure reality and one to continue fighting for.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction ... The chain reaction of evil -- hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars -- must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.
Strength To Love, 1963.

U.S. law encourages Americans to fly the U.S. flag on holidays and a few other occasions. Congress set aside the third Monday in January as a holiday to commemorate the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
To honor Dr. King, for several years civil rights leaders and others have urged us to find some way to serve our communities on this day — Americans have done it long enough to make it a tradition. Men often hate each other because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they don't know each other because they can not communicate; they can not communicate because they are separated.

Somehow this madness must cease. We must stop now. I speak as a child of God and brother to the suffering poor of Vietnam. I speak for those whose land is being laid waste, whose homes are being destroyed, whose culture is being subverted. I speak for the poor in America who are paying the double price of smashed hopes at home and death and corruption in Vietnam. I speak as a citizen of the world, for the world as it stands aghast at the path we have taken. I speak as an American to the leaders of my own nation. The great initiative in this war is ours. The initiative to stop it must be ours.

The five Braintree residents honored at a Town Hall ceremony Thursday night have had a ripple effect on others in the community by embracing the loving ethos of Martin Luther King Jr. through works of generosity such as supporting food pantries, helping Braintree's youth, organizing other volunteers and serving taxpayers through efficient government work.
Michael King, Sr. stepped in a pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church upon the death of his father-in-law in 1931. He too became a very successful minister and adopted the name Martin Luther King, Sr. in honor of the German Protestant religious leader Martin Luther. In due time, Michael, Jr. would follow his dad’s lead and adopt the name himself.
Earlier this winter, for instance, Corcoran dressed up as Santa to charm local kids during Braintree's tree lighting ceremony. He has also served Town Meeting, the Board of Health and the Town Study Committee.
Love and generosity, Mulvey said, are both about commitment, and the Frasers illustrate "love in action."
