A free short stack of pancakes will be served to customers from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at participating locations on Feb. 28. A short stack consists of three pancakes.
IHOP, also known as the International House of Pancakes, is asking that in return for the free pancakes, that customers will donate money to support local children's hospitals through the Children's Miracle Network.
National Pancake Day is tomorrow, Tuesday February 28th, and the International House of Pancakes knows exactly how to celebrate!
IHOP plans to give away a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes to every hungry customer they can fit inside their dining rooms tomorrow, nationwide. There are two IHOP locations in the Louisville area to choose from. One in St. Matthews, and another across the bridge in Clarksville, Indiana. Both locations are open 24 hours. 
In exchange for the free pancakes, IHOP requests that customers leave an optional donation to the Children's Miracle Network.

At least 180 people are dead after Tropical Storm Washi pummeled the Philippines, officials said Saturday. The deaths occurred in areas such as Iligan and Cagayan de Oro cities and Compostela Valley and Zamboanga del Norte -- Storm, floods in south Philippines kill nearly 200 The Associated Press Storm, 

The vast majority of the bodies were found in the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro, according to military officials and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Five people were killed in a landslide, but all others died in flash flooding.

The provinces of Compostela Valley and Zamboanga del Norte were also hit, said Benito Ramos, chairman of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
About 400 people are missing after the storm, which is called Sendong locally. More than 2,000 have been rescued, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said officials are investigating reports that an entire village was swept away.

10,000 soldiers embarked on search-and-rescue operations, the military said.
Though Washi was headed away from the Philippines on Saturday, trouble could loom for Vietnam, as the storm's westerly path could cross Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday.

GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain fielded questions during multiple Fox News interviews on Tuesday night, appearing on Report with Bret Baier as well as "The O'Reilly Factor."    
The woman was one of two whose accusations of sexual harassment by Mr. Cain, now a Republican candidate for president, led to paid severance agreements during his 1996-99 tenure at the association. Disclosure of the scale of the severance further challenged his initial description of the matter as a ‘witch hunt, as did new descriptions from the woman’s friends and colleagues of her level of discomfort at work.
The lawyer for one of two women who reportedly accused Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain of sexual harassment in the 1990s said Tuesday he had asked their former employer to waive an agreement and allow her to talk openly about her allegations.

 

The newspaper cited three sources as saying that the woman, then an employee at the National Restaurant Association, was given the amount – a full year's salary – after saying the encounter with Cain had made her uncomfortable.

Mr Cain, a former pizza company CEO who has led recent polls, was chief executive of the association at that time. 
The candidate has denied any wrongdoing but admitted on Tuesday that a woman who accused him of sexual harassment received a paid settlement in the 1990s.
Mr. Cain also kept a dinner appointment with a small group of Republican senators at a Washington steakhouse near the White House. He arrived through a parking garage and entered a private room in the basement of Bobby Van’s, which allowed him to bypass a cluster of reporters who gathered outside.
Politico said it had started asking Cain's campaign about the allegations on Oct. 20 — 10 days before the story was published late Sunday.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah, considered a reformer by the standards of his own ultraconservative kingdom, decreed on Sunday that women will for the first time have the right to vote and run in local elections due in 2015.
It is a "Saudi Spring" of sorts.
For the nation's women, it is a giant leap forward, though they remain unable to serve as Cabinet ministers, drive or travel abroad without permission from a male guardian.
Saudi women bear the brunt of their nation's deeply conservative values, often finding themselves the target of the unwanted attention of the kingdom's intrusive religious police, who enforce a rigid interpretation of Islamic Shariah law on the streets and public places like shopping malls and university campuses.
The decision to give the women the right to vote and run in municipal elections may not be enough to satisfy the growing ambition of the kingdom's women who, after years of lavish state spending on education and vocational training, significantly improved their standing but could not secure the same place in society as that of their male compatriots.
That woman must wait four more years to exercise their newly acquired right to vote adds insult to injury since Sunday's announcement was already a long time coming – and the next local elections are in fact scheduled for this Thursday.
"Why not tomorrow?" asked prominent Saudi feminist Wajeha al-Hawaidar. "I think the king doesn't want to shake the country, but we look around us and we think it is a shame ... when we are still pondering how to meet simple women's rights."
The announcement by King Abdullah came in an annual speech before his advisory assembly, or Shura Council. It was made after he consulted with the nation's top religious clerics, whose advice carries great weight in the kingdom.
It is an attempt at "Saudi style" reform, moves that avoid antagonizing the powerful clergy and a conservative segment of the population. Additionally, it seems to be part of the king's drive to insulate his vast, oil-rich country from the upheavals sweeping other Arab nations, with popular uprisings toppling regimes that once looked as secure as his own.
In contrast, King Abdullah in August withdrew the Saudi ambassador from Syria to protest President Bashar Assad's brutal crackdown on a seven-month uprising that calls for his ouster and the establishment of a democratic government.
The United States, Saudi Arabia's closest Western ally, praised the king's move.
"Muslim women in our Islamic history have demonstrated positions that expressed correct opinions and advice," said the king.
Abdullah became the country's de facto ruler in 1995 because of the illness of King Fahd and formally ascended to the throne upon Fahd's death in August 2005.
The king on Sunday also announced that women would be appointed to the Shura Council, a currently all-male body established in 1993 to offer counsel on general policies in the kingdom and to debate economic and social development plans and agreements signed between the kingdom with other nations.
The question of women's rights in Saudi Arabia is a touchy one. In a country where no social or political force is strong enough to affect change in women's rights, it is up to the king to do it. Even then, the king must find consensus before he takes a step in that direction.

Sudanese twins born with the tops of their heads joined together have been separated in a rare and risky series of operations at a London children's hospital, officials said Sunday.

Facing the World, a charity which helps disfigured children, said it had helped fund the four-stage operation on 11-month-olds Rital and Ritag Gaboura.

Twins born joined at the head are known as craniopagus twins and they occur in about one in 2.5 million births. Separating them can be dangerous, especially if — as in this case — there's significant blood flow between their brains.

"It's extremely high-risk," said Dr. James Goodrich, who co-ordinated a similar separation of conjoined twins at New York's Montefiore Children's Hospital in 2004.

But the alternative can be just as bad. Because conjoined twins almost never pump the blood across their bodies evenly, the strongest sibling strains his or her heart trying to pick up the slack. Facing the World said that Ritag's overworked heart was already failing by the time her family arrived in Britain.

The separation took place in stages at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital. Two operations took place in May. Tissue expanders — essentially balloons intended to help stretch the babies' skin over their newly exposed heads — were inserted in July. The final separation took place on Aug. 15.

"Incidences of surviving twins with this condition is extremely rare," lead surgeon David Dunaway said in a statement released by the charity. "The task presented innumerable challenges and we were all very aware of our responsibilities to the family and these two little girls."

The after photograph showed both side-by-side looking alert and healthy, clutching white stuffed animals.

"Within days the twins were back on the general ward interacting and playing as before," the charity said. Its executive co-ordinator, Sarah Driver-Jowitt, predicted that the girls' parents — who haven't been named — may soon return home "with two healthy, separate girls."

 

Although rare, operations to separate twins linked by their heads aren't unheard of. The U.S. National Library of Medicine records that one of the first successful operations to separate craniopagus twins took place in 1956.

Americans believe Hillary Clinton would have been a better president than Barack Obama, and two-thirds view her favorably, according to a new Bloomberg News poll.
"The most popular national political figure in America today is one who was rejected by her own party three years ago: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton," Bloomberg News'  John McCormick wrote on the poll's findings, which were released Friday.
While 34 percent of those polled believe "things would be better under a Clinton administration," McCormick wrote, "almost half--47 percent--say things would be about the same, and 13 percent say worse."
By contrast, "35 percent of those polled believe the country would be worse off if John McCain had been elected president," Holly Bailey reported at The Ticket.
"Clinton remains the most popular political figure on the national scene, with 64 percent of those polled saying they have a 'favorable' view of the Secretary of State, Bailey wrote.
"Obama's favorable rating is at 50 percent—even though 49 percent of those polled disapprove of the job he's doing as president. A majority of Democrats say Obama is their best candidate in 2012, though just under a third—30 percent—say they'd prefer to have someone else on the ticket."

Seminar seeks to help prevent police suicides

Another recent study by the Badge of Life, a group of active and retired police officers, medical experts and families affected by suicide, found that police officers have a higher suicide rate than the general public. The research found that while the suicide rate for the general public was 11 per 100,000 people.

A seminar on mental health in law enforcement hoped to help law enforcement officials deal with the stress of the job and help distressed officers before it becomes too late.

Several Norwalk Police officers joined about 300 police officials from around the state who attended the seminar, which took place Wednesday at Central Connecticut University and was sponsored by the Connecticut Alliance to Benefit Law Enforcement and the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

"The difficult thing is that it's not always easy to identify someone who may be experiencing these difficulties," said Norwalk Police Chief Harry Rilling.

The seminar, titled "Training the Mind: Preventing Police Suicide and Promoting Mental Wellness," featured information about how to spot the signs and symptoms of emotionally distressed officers as well as instructions on how to get help for distressed officers and coping with stress. Rilling said the training is valuable, because it gives officers the tools to help identify "any personnel that is prone to harming themselves."

National studies show that about 140 police officers across the country killed themselves each year from 2008 to 2010, and that officers are three times more likely to kill themselves than to be killed by others.

Special guests Sonia the ‘Bangladesh Freedom Honour’

The National Congress president of Indian, Sonia Gandhi, arrived in Dhaka on Sunday evening on a 24-hour tour.

 ‘Bangladesh Freedom Honors’ receive to be conferred posthumously on her mother-in-law and former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi by the Bangladesh government.

The speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan, Fehmida Mirza, Sri Lankan first lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa and Maldives second lady Ilham Hussain, wife of the vice-president of the country, also arrived in Dhaka on the day to attend the conference. The government is giving them VVIP protocol and security.

Sonia is visiting Dhaka on an invitation from prime minister Sheikh Hasina, arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by an Indian Air Force flight at about 8:45pm.Foreign minister Dipu Moni, lead by received them at the airport.

Sonia will address the conference as the chief guest while Sheikh Hasina and three other VVIP visitors as special guests.

At a function at the Bangabhaban at about 5:30pm, president Zillur Rahman will hand over to Sonia the ‘Bangladesh Freedom Honour’ to be conferred on Indira Gandhi posthumously for her  unique contribution to Bangladesh’s War of Liberation in 1971.

State-run Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar would air live the programme jointly organised by the ministries of foreign affairs and Liberation War affairs and the Cabinet Division.

Sonia is scheduled to leave Dhaka by a special flight at about 9:00pm today. Other visiting VVIPs are scheduled to leave Dhaka on Tuesday and Wednesday.  

The Centre for Neurodevelopment and Autism in Children of BSMMU and US-based Autism Speaks will jointly organise the conference. World Health Organisation is supporting the programme.

The main conference will be held on Monday and Tuesday and the post-conference training sessions and panel discussions on awareness and advocacy, education, services and research on autism spectrum disorders will take place at the BSMMU from Wednesday to Friday.

The government has issued top security alert, code named Grade-1, in the capital to ensure foolproof security for Sonia Gandhi and other VVIP guests.
