Suicide explosives Car Bomber in Baghdad

An explosives-packed Car bomber suicide killed at least 32 people and injured about 60 in a predominantly Shia Muslim district of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

 

A security official told Reuters the bomber had initially attempted to attack a police station.

Attacks in Iraq have risen since US troops left last month, with 16 people killed in attacks on Thursday.

Police officials said the blast occurred at 11:00 a.m. in the predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Zafaraniyah, where mourners had gathered for the funeral of a person killed the day before. They said 65 people were wounded in the attack, including 16 policemen.

Hospital officials confirmed the death toll.

Across Iraq, at least 200 people have been killed in a wave of attacks by suspected insurgents since the beginning of the year, raising concerns that the surge in violence and an escalating political crisis might deteriorate into a civil war.

The blast occurred as mourners passed by an outdoor market headed toward a hospital in Baghdad's Zafarniya district to recover the bodies of three relatives shot the night before in the western part of the city, the officials said.

The violence has raised concerns about the ability of Iraqi security forces to ensure order, particularly after the United States withdrew troops at the end of 2011.

The situation has been further inflamed with a political bloc loyal to radical, anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr calling for the dissolution of parliament and early elections.

Friday's blast is the second deadliest single attack in Iraq this month.

The last U.S. soldiers left the country Dec. 18.

Bhutto killing: Pakistan court indicts two police and five Taliban militants.

Pakistani anti-terror court Saturday indicted two police officers and five alleged Taliban militants over the 2007 assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, a prosecutor said.

 “Seven accused including two police officers have been indicted,” public prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar told media.

had returned from exile two months before she was killed in December 2007.

The police officers were Saud Aziz, who was the Rawalpindi police chief at the time of the killing, and Khurram Shahzad, another senior policeman.
Nobody has been jailed yet for Bhutto’s assassination.

Police say that three other suspects in the high-profile case have been killed -- including the chief of the Pakistani Taliban, Baitullah Mehsud -- and two remain at large.
Her assassination on December 27, 2007, came just weeks after she returned to the country.
The five alleged militants are accused of "criminal conspiracy" for bringing the suicide bomber from the tribal belt in the northwest and keeping him at a house in Rawalpindi.  

All the accused denied the charges and demanded for trial," Azhar said, adding that the police officers were accused of a security breach and for their "failure" to protect Bhutto.
Mehsud was killed in a US drone attack in August 2009, one of the most high-profile casualties of the covert American campaign targeting al-Qaeda and its allies in Pakistan's lawless tribal belt on the Afghan border.
Bhutto, who served two terms as prime minister, had returned from exile two months before she was killed to stand for election.
Her widower Asif Ali Zardari led her Pakistan People's Party to election victory in February 2008 and is now president.
Police were arrested a year ago while the suspected militants have been in custody for nearly four years.
The seven were indicted at the court in a high-security prison in Rawalpindi, a garrison city near the capital Islamabad where Bhutto was killed in a gun and suicide attack after addressing an election campaign rally.

KABUL, Afghanistan — A suicide attacker blew up an explosives-packed car Friday while it was being inspected at a border police checkpoint that had been set up in southern Afghanistan because of a warning of an imminent attack. Three officers were killed.

Total news of a suicide car bomb has exploded in the eastern Afghan city of Khost, killing at least eight people and injuring scores more, police said. The resurgent Taliban guerrillas, fighting to drive out foreign forces and government, claimed responsibility bombing for the attack which targeted a police station.
The officers were on a routine patrol at the entrance of the compound when the attack happened, said Daoud Ahmadi, a spokesman for the governor of Helmand province. One child was also killed in the strike that left behind seven other police officers wounded, he said.
A patrolman and an officer – were among the dead, said Abdul-Hakim Isaqzai, chief of Khost province the police, near Pakistan borders.
"It was very powerful, it shook Khost city," he said of the blast.
The police chief said security forces had surrounded the neighbor hood and ambulances were transporting the injured to medical facilities.
