Mom, daughter found dead; 2 sisters still missing

A Brooklyn mother accused of starving, drugging and beating her 4-year-old daughter to death says she never harmed the child.
Carlotta Brett-Pierce acknowledged at her trial Monday that the girl "had lost weight," but said she "didn't look bad."
Brett-Pierce and her mother, Loretta Brett, are charged with murder in the death of Marchella  in September of 2010. She weighed half what a child her age should, and had bruises and cuts on her body.
The defendants have pleaded not guilty and say they were doing the best they could.

The outcome of the murder trial may have repercussions for the child welfare workers once assigned to the family. They were charged with criminally negligent homicide and have also pleaded not guilty.
The search for two Tennessee girls is intensifying after their mother and older sister were found dead at their alleged kidnapper's house in north Mississippi.
The FBI says the bodies of Jo Ann Bain and her 14-year-old daughter, Adrienne Bain, were found behind Adam Mayes' house near Guntown. The FBI says agents believe Bain's 12- and 8-year-old daughters are still with Mayes.
The search for a man accused of abducting a Tennessee woman and her three young daughters has intensified after authorities said the mother and her oldest daughter were found dead in north Mississippi, behind a house belonging to the alleged kidnapper.
Authorities are looking for Adam Mayes, a 35-year-old family friend accused of abducting Jo Ann Bain and her daughters. Mayes was at the Bains' house helping them pack to move to Arizona when the mother and her three daughters vanished April 27, authorities said.
Bain and her three daughters disappeared April 27 as the family was packing to move to Arizona. Mayes was with them helping the family when they vanished.
FBI agents with rifles joined K-9 units and SWAT teams looking for Mayes in the woods and back roads near Guntown.
Mayes was last seen a week ago in Guntown, about 80 miles south of the Bain family's home in Whiteville, Tenn.
Both Gary Bain and Mayes were once married to sisters, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm said.
Mayes had stayed over at the Bains' house to help the family pack and load up a U-Haul to drive across the country to Arizona, Helm said. Gary Bain, who was at the house that night, awoke to find his wife, daughters and Mayes gone.
He couldn't reach his wife on her cell phone that day, and reported them missing when the girls didn't get off the school bus.
Linda Kirkland, a family friend and cook at the Country Cafe in Whiteville, said the woman and her daughters were moving to Arizona because two of the girls had asthma.
Mayes also has ties to Arizona, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida.
Mayes and the Bains were known around Whiteville, a town of about 4,500 people 60 miles east of Memphis. Mayes was a longtime friend of Bain's husband and had been at their home the evening before they disappeared, police said.

US woman birth a big baby boy

Cynthia Sigler of Vista holds Jayden, who weighed 13 pounds, 14 ounces when he was born Thursday at Tri-City Medical Center.
A Southern California woman says doctors predicted she would give birth to a big baby boy, but nobody was prepared for just how big.
Jayden Sigler weighed in at 13 pounds, 14 ounces, when the healthy boy was delivered Thursday by cesarean section, the North County Times reported Saturday.

On Friday a California woman gave birth to a baby that weighed in close to 14 pounds. Medical staff at the Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside said they couldn't remember delivering a larger baby.
Cynthia Sigler reportedly knew for months her baby would be a boy. What she didn't know was that he'd be born at astonishing 13-pounds, 14-ounces. His length is 21 inches long.
According to the Guinness Book of Records, the largest baby ever born was 23 pounds, 12 ounces in Canada in 1879. Sadly the baby died within 24-hours of birth. The largest surviving birth was 22 pounds, 8 ounces and was born in Italy in 1955, noted Guinness.
Sigler said her own family didn't believe her at first -- she convinced her cousin it wasn't a joke only after showing a photo of the scale readout.
Jayden's birth weight is almost twice that of his sister, Jailyn, now 2½. She was 7 pounds, 2 ounces at birth.
A hospital official was unable to immediately determine Friday whether Jayden was the largest baby ever delivered there. It was also not clear where the newborn ranks among the largest babies also born in San Diego County.
Sigler said she'll have to exchange all the baby clothes she bought for larger sizes.

Saudis halt lashing sentence of woman driver

Saudis halt lashing sentence of woman driver
Member of royal family announces decision on Twitter
Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has put a stop to the lashing of a woman who defied the kingdom's ban on female drivers, a government official said.
The official declined to elaborate. He spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

"Thank God, the lashing of Shaima is cancelled. Thanks to our beloved King," Saudi Princess Ameerah Al-Taweel posted on her Twitter account Wednesday. "I'm sure all Saudi women will be so happy,I know I am."
Al-Taweel is the wife of Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Amira. Al-Taweel said in a later post on twitter the prince had confirmed the sentence had been revoked by the king.

The driver, Shaima Jastaina, driving car was sentenced on Tuesday to be lashed 10 times with a whip for a violation of the longtime driving ban for women in the ultraconservative Muslim nation.

Normally, police just stop female drivers, question them and let them go after they sign a pledge not to drive again. But dozens of women have continued to take to the roads since June in a campaign to break the taboo.
Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world that bans women — both Saudi and foreign — from driving. The prohibition forces families to hire live-in drivers, and those who cannot afford the $300 to $400 a month for a driver must rely on male relatives to drive them to work, school, shopping or the doctor.
There are no written laws that restrict women from driving. Rather, the ban is rooted in conservative traditions and religious views that hold giving freedom of movement to women would make them vulnerable to sins.

"I will now be able to do things I once took for granted," Nash said in a statement.

"I will be able to smell. I will be able to eat normally. I will no longer be disfigured. I will have lips and will speak clearly once again. I will be able to kiss and hug loved ones."

Nash was hurt after a friend's 200-pound (91 kg) pet chimpanzee went on a rampage two years ago. She lost her hands, lips, nose and eyes, leaving her blind and disfigured after the attack. The animal was eventually shot and killed by police.

Nash's full face transplant was the third surgery of its kind performed in the United States, all at the same hospital.

An anonymous female donor provided face, hands and other tissue material that made the surgery possible. The hand transplant was deemed successful but the hands did not thrive after complications from pneumonia and were removed.

The world's first full face transplant was completed in Spain in 2010.

A tiger woman! Holy cow!

Rupert Murdoch wins hearts & minds in China

You can take the girl out of China, but not China out of the girl that Wendi Deng, aka Mrs Rupert Murdoch, showed.

A leap and a spike, Deng overnight appeared to have soared into the hearts of many in mainland China who wrote on Sina Weibo
(a Chinese Twitter clone):
--“Deng Wendi is a pearl among women!”
--“Mrs Deng Wendi, you are my idol from now on!”

May be it was something about the image of a Chinese woman in a room crammed with mostly white males jumping up to defend her husband from an errant pie-thrower. (at least the part of the room that was broadcast on BBC World Television),

“Every woman has to learn from Deng Wendi.  Be an original wife.  Be a good mistress. Be a good stepmother.  Slap protesters.  Be good at socializing in public but also taking care of the home in private.  She’s cunning on the inside and strong on the outside.  Act like a tiger woman!  Holy cow!”  (Thanks to TheNanfang.com for these examples.)

Deng didn’t just defend.  She attacked.  She pounced.  The former volleyball player got right in there with a one-two, according to a Telegraph journalist who sat only ten feet away from the incident:

“First, she swung a slap at her husband’s attacker.  She followed up by picking up the plate and trying to strike him with it.  And then she moved back to her husband.”

For years, in China, she wasn’t viewed too favorably--mostly because of her image as a social climber, marrying her way out and up.
